Electric utilities cautioning customers on door-to-door canvassing

DurhamRegion, ON – Veridian Connections and Whitby Hydro are cautioning their customers to be aware of individuals claiming that their electricity provider has scheduled an appointment for services such as thermostat and furnace replacements.

In recent weeks, customers in Durham Region have had what would appear to be a representative from their electric utility arrive at their doorstep, requesting entry into their home to replace their existing thermostat or furnace with a new one. This individual does not represent and is in no way associated with the utilities.

Veridian Connections and Whitby Hydro are reminding customers that it’s important to know who they’re dealing with if a salesperson knocks on their door. Customers should ask for proper identification such as a business card or ID badge, and not share personal information like their electricity or gas bill, regardless of what company they represent. Suspicious activity should be reported immediately to Durham Regional Police Services at 905-579-1520.
