peaksaver Pilot

Can anyone enroll in the peaksaver program?

To Top

VERIDIAN CONNECTIONS is offering the peaksaver program to property owners that are VERIDIAN CONNECTIONS customers in Bowmanville or Port Hope (residential and small commercial) that have central air conditioning. Small commercial businesses are eligible if the air conditioner systems are similar in size to those used by residential homes. In addition to central air conditioning, the peaksaver program can manage hot water heaters and pool pumps.

Can I really make a difference by participating?

To Top

Yes. By participating, you and hundreds of others will allow us to reduce the strain on the electrical system during peak periods. By doing very little on your part, you are making a significant contribution to conserving electricity and improving our environment.

We expect that the peaksaver program will reduce the demand on the electrical system by approximately 1-2 kilowatts per home. That's the equivalent of turning off ten to twenty 100 watt light bulbs. This means we will need to import less electricity at higher prices, and delay the need to build additional power plants - that saves everyone money by keeping electric prices low.

What do I get for participating?

To Top

For Homeowners : As a peaksaver Pilot Program participant you will have load control switch(es) professionally installed at no charge and you will receive a cheque of $25.00 by mail.

For Commercial: As a peaksaver Pilot Program participant you will have a programmable thermostat professionally installed at no charge, a value of up to $250. The thermostat installed will be programmed to suit your business and you’ll be able to change the settings of your thermostat through the Internet. And if your business installs load control switch(es) as well, your business will receive a cheque of $25.00 by mail.

How does peaksaver work?

To Top

During peak periods, VERIDIAN CONNECTIONS will send a signal to your air conditioner or water heater to interrupt power to the appliance for a short time. Air conditioners are cycled off for 15 minutes out of every 30 minutes.

Water heaters and pool pumps are turned off for the entire load management period - this time will not exceed 4 hours. For some small commercial customers like retail stores, their programmable thermostats will be increased by 2° C and/or the A/C will be instructed to turn 'on' less frequently.

What do I do if I don't own the house or business property? Can I still enroll?

To Top

Yes. All you need to do is have your landlord notify us and give us written permission to install the peaksaver switch or thermostat.

I live in a townhome, am I eligible?

To Top

If your unit has a separate central air conditioning (A/C) unit you are eligible to participate for the peaksaver program.

Why does VERIDIAN CONNECTIONS have this program anyway?

To Top

We are always looking for ways to help our customers and our province conserve electricity to ensure a continuous supply of electricity. Programs like peaksaver help everyone in the long run by reducing the need to import electricity and reducing the pressures on our distribution system. It's totally green - peaksaver will help to reduce the size of future generators, reduce the emissions caused by electricity generation and hopefully reduce the number of smog days in VERIDIAN territory (or Ontario).

Which of my home appliances are eligible for peaksaver? Who chooses this?

To Top

To be eligible for the program, you must have a central air conditioning system.  Additional appliances that could be added to the load control switch program are electric hot water heaters and/or pool pumps. This program is strictly voluntary and the decision to add any additional appliances and/or systems is made by you.

Won't I/my employees/my customers be uncomfortable if you switch my A/C off, especially when it's hot?

To Top

Typically, most people do not even notice that the switch is being controlled. With peaksaver, your air conditioner fan will continue to run during the control period even though the A/C unit is being switched off for a short time. Your water heater will be cycled off for the whole peak period, but since it has a reserve of hot water you should have plenty of hot water during that brief time.

Will it cost me anything to participate?

To Top

It will not cost you anything to participate and there is no maintenance cost. Just for participation in the switch installation program, you will receive a $25 cheque by mail.

How much money could the peaksaver Program potentially save me?

To Top

You may not automatically see the savings directly on your bill, but this program will save everyone money by keeping the cost of power lower in the future by reducing the need to import electricity. Also, if your business currently has a central air conditioning system controlled by a conventional non-programmable thermostat, the installation of the peaksaver thermostat when programmed effectively could potentially result in annual savings of up to 20% in your bill.

How do I request that my equipment not be controlled for a particular date?

To Top

If you would like to opt out on a particular date, please call 1-866-323-0206 and someone will be able to answer your questions and schedule the exemption.
